Looks good. You can use the same thing to help bump a drain up to get proper slope for drainage.

Lol. They should have kept it. I took this picture before I went outside. It was a Trane 1200XL installed 7-1988. I dont think it was cleaned since 1988 either. After flushing it clean and running for 10 mins it acted like it was low (very low pressures on high and low). It takes 8 lbs 8 oz so I added R-22 until it reached 63 psi low, 175 high. It wouldnt go any higher. No matter how much I added... the pressures would rise slightly above 64/175 and then drop back. Im 99.999999% sure the problems were at the aluminum coil to copper junctions inside the condenser. They are all horribly corroded and powdery.

Just to see what would happen I opened the valve fully as liquid into the vapor line. The darn thing didnt even burp, and the gauges hardly moved beyond what I had listed above. I ended up using about 10 lbs of refrigerant, but oh well, such is life. I'm getting the new install and gave a discount on the "test" refrigerant.

Oh, the compressor had a giant orange bucket on top of it. Made it look like the Great Pumpkin.

Was the bucket there to hold the condenser fan in place?

Lol no. It looked like it was designed to cover the compressor, similar to the noise reduction diapers all the other manufacturers use.

a restriction would cause a pressure rise someplace. also, the unit shouldnt be able to hold nearly double capacity and not slug and not sound loaded. and the line set at the piston sounds like it's low on charge - not a constant hiss...the random "hiss-nothing-hiss-nothing".

    the charge is going someplace.
