Not sure if I should do this..

I signed on with a warranty company to help get by this winter. On one of their calls I ran across a 4-ton r-22 lennox heat pump. This unit needs a new evap coil. I call it in to the warranty company to let them know. They decide to replace the air handler. (So far everything is normal). They send me a carrier 410A air handler. They did however send me a 5-ton air handler. my question is this...Can I install a 5-ton 410a coil in lieu of a 4-ton r-22 coil by using the old r-22 txv? Any comments will be appreciated. thanks

Warn them, and if they're willing to pay, install it. Sounds like you'll be screwing with it though.....playing with fan speed and charge, especially a heat pump. I don't see why they don't send you the right a/h. The 410a probably cost more...
If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.

    Confused

I forgot to add that I will still be using R-22. I know that you never put in 410a in a r-22 system but have never heard anything about the reverse. Since 410a is more efficient, the coils are smaller than the equivalant tonnage of a r-22 system. Since the coil sent to me is larger than the one already there I was thinking that may be fine in that regard. However, I have never heard of mix matching this type of equipment and it just doesn't seem RIGHT. Why should or shouldn't I do this changeout.

I've never done warranty work but why are they having you put in an entire airhandler as apposed to just a new coil ?

    thats the thing

The home owner just pays a small deductible which we collect. The warranty company is the one buying the airhandler and paying for installation. I dont want to be married to this thing if its not going to work. Same thing I told my wife.lol

Might want to edit out the price. It's not allowed in the open forums. But that is a bunch of cash for a 4 ton coil. Wow.

If it wasn't a heat pump I would try it. I say this based on theroy only.

No. 1 it is a heat pump. No. 2 it is for a contract service company. They will take 90-180 days to pay. You should do everything by the book with them.

Don't be trying to save anyone any money here. The people you are working for and the people they are working for can well afford to do the repair the right by the book.
