    Question goodman vs. armstrong

My contractor is offering a choice between a high efficiency Armstrong or a high efficiency Goodman. He said the Armstrong uses a stainless steel heat exchanger. Is this important, and is it worth the difference in price?

Six of one, half-a-dozen of the other. I think parts are more readily available for the Goodman but otherwise, they're both builders products. The good stuff carries bigger named labels, like Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Bryant, American Standard, York. The prices are commensurately higher, which is why builders won't use them. BTB, they all have builders products so even the name doesn't tell the whole tale. But if it's Carrier Infinity or Bryant Evolution, you're talking top of the line in comfort and all the bells and whistles. Good stuff that.
If YOU want change, YOU have to first change.

If you are waiting for the 'other guy' to change first, just remember, you're the 'other guy's' other guy. To continue to expect real change when you keep acting the same way as always, is folly. Won't happen. Real change will only happen when a majority of the people change the way they vote!

Trane all the way... or Rheem, York, or Lennox.

Sorry, that doesn't really answer your question. What model numbers are we dealing with here? Was a load calculation done to determine proper sizing? The install matters more than the brand. Any brand can be good or bad; it all depends on how well or how poorly it is installed. Of course, that doesn't mean problems still won't occur.

    Please tell us why.

Do a search for "lennox cracked heat exchanger"; there are plenty of posts re: burner alignment problems - apparently a manufacturing screwup.

IMO..In the majority of cases a better overall installation is more important than the equipment choice, especially when comparing those two brands.

Assuming you are referring to a furnace only, they are both good brands.

Compare efficiencies a little better then just "high efficiency". Funaces with at least a 95% efficiency rating qualify for a $150 tax credit. Also, how do the warranties compare? The Goodman has a lifetime heat exchanger warranty with a furnace replacement if the heat exchanger were to fail in the first ten years. I am not familiar with the particulars on the Armstrong.

For those spouting out about Lennox, Armstrong is owned by Lennox.
