it all seemed ok. I replaced the plastic idler with a metal one. No history on the unit.

Had a Carrier do that. I broke out the little arc welder and tacked it back together. Carrier blower motors are expensive.

If you tacked the bracket back on wouldn't you risk messing up the windings?

Wouldn't matter at that point. The motors already bad so it's worth the effort to try.

I've seen this before when an adjustable motor sheave is opened to far. The belt hangs up in the sheave and pulls it off of its bracket.

That's what I figured too. My thought was the belt was way too tight and it busted on start up. Cogged belt. Still running as far as I know.

I've recently had this happen, twice I think, on rubber mounted motors in the 3/4 to 1 HP range. The motor base cracks in two pieces. And the cracked pieces look as if they are cheap metal like a cast iron look as when cracked.

hell, they're welded on at the factory. so, long as the motor isnt all twisted up or it doesnt sound crappy i might take a shot at welding it all back together,

If you look at the bracket in the pic it has two cracks in it. The bracket is shot and I did not want to take the chance of having it break again. The customer agreed so I replaced it.

i missed those with my new to me (used) laptop screen. i had to blow it up on the phone. they;re pretty good size.

i suppose the warranty, as well as the lack of complaints, is better with a new motor
