Confused 2 year old Amana Furnace not igniting.

    Hello,

I have a 2 year old Amana GUIC model furnace. (I believe it is the Air Commander 80) I have 2 units, 1 serving the basement and 1st floor and another serving the the second floor and attic.

I seem to have a problem with the second unit, the one serving the second floor and attic.

It's getting cold, so I decided to put some heat on. So I dialed it in and everything seemed to be going as usual. I can feel the heat from the register, the fan is blowing, etc. Anyways, I went to the basement for a few hours to watch a movie, then when I went back upstairs I realized that the heat was off, even though the stat showed room temp to be 70 degrees and I had requested 76 degrees.

So I turned if off and back on. I could here the furnace trying to turn on, but in 2 to 3 secs it turns off. So I went to the attic where it is located, opened up the cover to see if I had any flame, etc...sorry, I am a complete newbie.

It looks like the control board has power going through it, the blower would start up, but before I see any flame, the whole thing would turn off. I noticed that there is an red indicator light on the control board and it flashed 8 times. I looked at the inside panel and it says something about grounding, etc.

In the area where there's usually flames, I see that there is a small "bar" that begins to glow. (I assume this is what helps things flame up when combined with the gas?) It glows to bright orange. But then everthing shuts down. From the time it starts up and shuts down, it's about 3 seconds or so.

Obviously, I'm probably going to need a tech to come over my house. I was wondering if anyone could guess as to what is going on so I can at least be on the level with the tech.

Again, the furnace seemed to have started up normally once. Actually, I know that it was on for a good 15-30 minutes or so since I was taking a shower and it was still on after I got out. Then poof...it went. Now it won't come back up.

Last winter, we have no problems with it at all...so trying to find out what the heck happened.

    Thanks!

That fault code could be erroneous but means that the path to earth grd might be faulty.

My gut tells me it's in the the flame detection circuit wether it be the the brain or the flame sampler.

When was the last time you changed the filter and had the unit service for the season?

Could still be the ignitor. Ignitors can glow and still not be hot enough to ignite the gas. I agree though that there are several things that could be going on.

    What's an electronic gas valve?
