    install problem - return ductwork

New furnace installed today. Required some new custom ductwork for the return. Somewhere in the process someone got the measurements wrong because it didn't match up. Installer said he would be able to get it remade in a couple days.

Unfortunately the weather just turned cold this week. Is it ok to run the heat without the return connected, in other words, where it just draws air from the basement?

also make sure that it won't pull air from a chimney vented water heater via the drafthood if so make sure that the room is left open so that there is lots of air (doors open )

Be careful with dust and airflow as said above. You need to make sure it's filtered. Is there anyway you can contact your contractor over the weekend to see if they approve of this?

contractor said it would be ok, but I just wanted to post for a second opinion. The filter bracket was missing when the unit was unpacked, so he taped the filter in place for now. I will keep all doors open for air flow, the unit is next to a chimney vented gas water heater.
