Frost on Roof

It's that time of year when we occasionally have frost on our roof tops. On my roof, some areas will have frost and others not. Is the absence of frost an indication of heat loss thru the roof via poor insulation? And conversely, frosted areas indicate more adequate insulation?

Yes, the absence of frost is an indicator of heat loss. That heat loss can come from less insulation or from warm air leaking up through the ceiling.

Or in my case a stupid a$$ builder who was lazy and did not feel like insulating the entire attic. Previous homeowners were duped!

If the roof is "shaded" by a tree or some other object, frost may not form.

in my area with lots of duct systems in the attic you can actually see each run out and register location by the lack of frost on the roof.
