Sloppy new Installs (the new way)
I live in NC and seen a new trend lately, the National home builders are building houses in my area and have several builders throwing up large square box houses(2 stories on slabs) and the Installs are terrible. Most of the HVAC co's doing them are coming from a distance and are big companies. I can't understand how there doing spider boxes' not using a duct system and just throwing flex everywhere, extremely long runs, poorly designed zone systems and continue to do them? There has got to be a ton of call backs with bad airflow and not working properly. Anybody seen this?

so true. bring that up and they tend to get really mad. especially if they got a really nice house. or they think that whoever they got for a home warranty company (if they have one) should pay for it. and they usually dont.

No money in residential installs these days, especially when you talk travel time. Everyone doing sloppy work trying to get in get out, and run job site in bulk. It's just busy work now, no profit. Glad Im not resi, resi got a bad name these days

Seriously? Res installs don't pay anything! Top dollar? On what planet? It is a game of pennies per square foot. The only real way to make a buck is toss quality out the window and hope you get a service contract or call back from the stickers you put on the AH and CU.
You and the builder might make decent money on custom homes, but tracts? Really?

Just came across that problem(again), went to a $850k house the other day with homeowner complaining of no air flow coming out of the vents on the 2nd floor, he said he had 3 companies come over to look at the problem, they all tried to sell him a 4 ton new system. I told a look in the attic and there it was the (cheese wedge system) with all 25' flex runs everywhere. I told him to get a manual J first to see if he really does need 4+ tons. And to start with making this mess in the attic more airflow friendly.

Realy go look into the matter and you'll see that the money for a high quality insall is in there if its not in the builder its the developer truly you cant think their giving it away to the final home buyer some may be triing to keep costs low but really come'on
