    Its a Ptrap like this one only they piped into the air release and out the inlet then left the out let sticking out to the right connected to nothing.

    Traps, while they do clog, are to keep air currents from going where they do not belong.
    And the picture of the horizontal coil does look like the refrigerant lines are stubbed...

    Some installs do not need a trap, others it is critical. There was a thread a few weeks ago about this... might search it and read over it.
    In my area... all installs must be trapped... even straight gas heat and straight AC.

    Cleaning out traps... is just part of PM maintenance... we get paid to do these things...
