Confused Use the program on yout T-stat

Twice recently I have installed programmable T-Stats at the customer's request(I offer three stats most times, the round 1 heat 1 cool, A programmable, or a touchscreen.) They both opted for a nice programmable unit. I install then ask them how they want it set up...Wake, leave....so on

They say "Oh set it about 74 degrees all the time."

I try to calmly explain to them that for it to save them $ that they should set it up to run less overnight or when they are not there. "No lets set it at 74."

Why then did they not opt for the round non programmable stat????

Are we all so enamored with technology that we just have to have it, even if we don't know how to use it to our advantage?

No problem. You want permanent hold on your new programmable thermostat? 74 degrees? You got it. Now pay me.

Ya it seems like most homeowners don't know how to use programmable t-stats and don't give a **** about energy consumption or regular maintainence. (they don't want to learn either, as long as it blows warm/cool air )

With all due respects, it doesn't work for shift workers. Nor the program for the water heater.

Yikes, those are the customer's that would cancel the hold, and it runs the preset program so they call us out as a callback.

Sometimes I've gone into the installation menu on the top of the line touchscreen Honeywell and just turned OFF the programming feature.

Then they just have a really fancy NON programmable t-stat!

Yeah, I either do that, or set the entire program schedule to be the same as their desired hold temperature so that when they hit run program, at least it's at a reasonable setting.

Exactly, but if that is the case, why don't they just get the cheap round unit????
