    Talking belt size

2nd yr of 4yr school for hvac/r teach gave us some complicated formula for finding belt dia. if we didn't know belt size . this formula includes all forms of math .

my ? is can't you use the tape and just wrap it around the pulleys like the belt and get the Dia. that way

pully's and sheaves have specific depth, a-belts and b-belt sheaves might not fit your tape.
Also consider this, in a pinch, if you were off an inch or two, you could adjust the motor to properly tension it anyway.
they'll teach you in school the proper way to do it right... if you practice the proper way, you might become fast enough at it so it becomes second nature, but then that might set you aside from the 'short-cut' mechanics.
    Just food for thought.

So lets say your going to take a larger pulley and install it to get more air flow. You want to go change the pulley and then use your tape measure to size it then drive to the supply house buy a belt, drive back to the job and put the belt on!! You must work some place where money is not an issue. Or maybe you stop at the supply house, buy the pulley and take 20 belts with you so you have the right size and then return all the extra belts to the supply house.

Most instructors have better things to do than teach unless info, I'm sure your instructor has a good reason for teaching these horrible formulas that may take 3 minutes to work but save the customer $100 and keep you employeed.

I hear the same crap from my apprentices, I tell them I'm not in the business of teaching 1/2 a$$ techs, I teach what I believe is the best way I know, what you do with it is up to you..

Now I'll get off my soap box!!

Im kind of lazy when it comes to math, so I wrote a little windows program that will allow you to enter shive sizes and centerline distance and it will calculate it for you. If you send me an email I can send it to you, or you could create your own with a spreadsheet like excel.

My email is in my profile.
