I am pricing out a compressor replacement for a 30 ton Voyager unit. Compressor is grounded its a 2 compressor unit in tandem. Will need a crane to remove old and bring up the new. Also will be flushing out the refrigerant system. Just wondering what the average price is out there for such a feat. Unit is out of warranty. Our cost on the compressor is at ...

Boy.......
That was quick.
Thanks
In regards to my last post. I am pricing this out to a customer, and it is actually the first time I have ever priced out something of this magnitude. When I see the numbers that I have come up with it seems really pricey comparing to a residential compressor replacement. I am being very careful here not to loose an account because I am so far over the top. I didn't ask for an exact amount of pricing brocco82. I guess I didn't understand a rule about pricing questions. As a new member you have proven that you obviously do.
Doc, you should qualify for pro status. Why don't you apply for that and we can move your post "behind closed doors" and discuss price

(1) a 7 year old could understand the rules if they are read throughly
(2) no disrespect, if you don't feel comfortable pricing it out on your own maybe you should turn it over to someone else.
(3) (advice if you do price it out) I work in the Commerical and Industrial end of this gig so don't worry about being a little high. You don't wanna under cut it, get the job but lose money. Better to not get it and not lose money.
(4) Good luck with it.
Sorry if I seemed to jump on you
(1) I'm only 6
(2) I feel comfortable with what I do. My reasons why I asked have been explaned. I have no one to turn this over to, it is my decision on the pricing of this job. The closest person to me that had experience pricing this kind of thing out was my boss. He passed away. It is now my responsibility to get this thing priced and sold without driving away an account that we have had for a while. They are a good customer. He would have known instantly if we were in line or not. I have the formula for pricing and that is what I used. Its just the shock of it when you see the numbers. Heck... Our price on the compressor was enough!
(3) I agree with 3
(4) Thanks
I appreciate the apology. Just kinda stressful when something like this is in your lap. Sometimes there are reasons that are unknown that people ask and do things they do. I can fix the problem with no problem, I can arrange the crane or whatever else. I can price anything given the tools and formulas. They have worked well. Sometimes though such as now...It may seem that formula may need to be lowered. But....I have to look at the truth in number 3
I just finished up a job similar to yours ... also did some duct work and controls... it went for 85k
Sorry to hear about your situation doc. This is my method when I need to price out a job which i'm iffy about.
Ask your techs what they think realistically hour wise, material and then try to hit that median between yours and his idea.
I don't know how many times I've had something in my head and then asked the guy doing it what he thought about the hours and we disagreed. Majority of the time the tech is right.
Think of it this way: That unit is 10 times the size of the residential units you're used too. Why should it not cost 10 times as much? (or more)
"Wheel" mechanics work on "Wheel" chillers
I don't know the average cost to replace a 30 ton compressor but anytime I work on an air conditioning system, on average; I bend 'em over and load 'em like a shotgun. That way, I make a killing. However, I'm still wondering what you found as the cause of this compressor failure.

Thanks for all of the replies. As far as pricing goes..My price did come out about 8 times the price of a residential compressor. The one I am pricing is a 14 ton that is tandem with another 14 ton compressor. They only want to replace the one compressor. I have had people tell me they should replace both compressors in that unit. I have a crane, and flushing of the system included in the price also. I am going to present the proposal tomorrow. What happened to the compressor? We believe Lightning. They lost another compressor at the same time in a 3 ton split unit and the disconnect box was also damaged, insides all melted and toasty. Another 30 ton voyager which is a twin to this one with the bad compressor wasn't working either and once I opened the diconnect box I found one of the fuses blown out of the socket that held it. This is one mother of a fuse to, just "fall" out. This all happened at the same time on the same building after some really bad storms. Do I know lightning for 100 percent sure? No...But it seems like it would be likely.
Check out Maneurop compressors, they are less expensive and are a drop-in replacement for Trane scrolls.
