Amana (Goodman) does even better - lifetime warranty for original owner:
Our ASX18 18 SEER and ASX16 16 SEER air conditioners and the ASZ18 18 SEER and ASZ16 16 SEER heat pumps use the environmentally friendly R410A refrigerant. All of these units feature the most comprehensive warranty coverage of any air conditioner or heat pump on the market. They offer Lifetime Limited Warranty protection for the compressor to the original, registered, single-family, homeowner of a properly matched system using these high-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps. If the original owner should have a compressor failure, we will replace the air conditioner or heat pump with a comparable Amanaฎ brand product
I've heard good and bad about Goodman. My personal experience with them is having an air handler with a restricted coil after around 7-8 years. Part of the heating package also shorted out. I can't blame that on the brand at all, though; it didn't owe me much, though - I had mismatched it twice. It was a good air handler while it lasted. I had a hard time with the filter sizes as someone else mentioned above. I have heard some noisy ones, though. Two of my neighbors had Goodmans put in by a reputable company and they seem quite happy.
I just put in my third Goodman system. The first two have been running trouble free for something like 2 and 9 years and I am happy with them. When the time came to replace this third system, a Goodman seemed like a good choice. This new one, however, is a nightmare that never ends. The same installer did all three systems.
I thought I was being smart when I removed our 20 year old gas pack and installed a new goodman heat pump, because gas rates really hiked up and power was still a decent price. Now, Nevada power has jacked our rates up through the roof and I'm sure I'll be paying outrageous power bills this winter! But, I am very happy with the new unit, even when we had our 117 degree heat wave, it held the house at 74.
I put Goodman in if customers ask for them or want lowest price.I have had next to no problems with the ones we installed in 13 years.I have customers that are afraid of things that they have heard about them so we put something else in for them.Usaully Bryant or Payne(same thing). No problems with them either.Brand does not matter.Just make sure the ductwork is right, the unit is sized right, air flow right, everything else will fall in place.
And this is just the attitude that makes people like you lesser techs. You go into situations with a bias that is based on hype and BS about engineering and design. If you had one ioda of a clue as to what engineering and design involves in the HVAC industry you'd know that it is all the same exact stuff in different packaging.
This kind of crap keeps reverting us back to the fact that Goodman has announced that it has the least amount of failed vendor parts then any other manufacturer and that no other manufacturer has ever disputed this claim or put their warranty record out in the open.
If you have more problems with any one particular brand then another, there are either more of that brand in your area or you are not being a good tech.

Practical Training is a must!
Trane took over the GE compressor and kept it going when they bought them out. I see you know nothing about Tranes history, so stop embarrassing yourself.
The climatuff compressor is the best compressor built -nothing like the copeland which is also a great compressor.
In 18 years and hundreds of Tranes I have installed, I have had 3 failures, and two weren't the compressors fault, but a completely clogged condensor, and the other an electrical problem.
I would think there would be better educated advice and statements by those who have been in this industry so long. If you don't know, it's best not to misguide with ignorance, those who truly want to learn. But I guess hiding behind a keyboard, one doesn't have to be correct.
Go ahead and keep handing out empty words- I'm done with this useless game.
Have a great day!

"Goodman has announced that it has the least amount of failed vendor parts then any other manufacturer"
so the parts last longer if not packaged in sturdy cabinets? but how would they know if the other manufacturers don't put their warranty record out in the open?
i was born under a wandrin star.
I was the one who started this catfight...and I would like to thank all of you who have weighed in on this subject...
About ME: I am a layperson, a homeowner wtih 3800 square foot house in Alabama that is 50 years old. I use 'independent' HVAC people that I have found to be reilable over the years...the guys with the low overhead who do the work themselves. This has served me superbly.
When I needed a replacement on the 2 ton unit 18 months ago, my HVAC pro told me about Goodman and said he used it in his own home. It was worked quite well...then the time came to replace my 5 ton Carrier with the rotted coil in the attic. I went with Goodman again.
Additionally, a fellow I play golf with is a 'production homebuilder' constructing several hundred homes a year. Interstingly, his background is not construction, but banking. He has come up with a 'formula' for home construction that is based on several factors: 1) slabs only 2) use the same windows in all homes etc. He does not build Hooverhomes but median-priced houses that allow the homeowner to select from several floorplans and finish out the details with their own flooring, countertops and appliance selections, regardless of price/quality. His formualae for homebuilding came out of years of commerical lending to contractors and homeowners and analyzing their strengths/weaknesses and where margins could be strengthened without compromising quality. As a result, he literally has a 'waiting list' when he opens a new development.
He is very quality/value conscious - riding the line between providing good prices on homes while at the same time, maintaining a reputation for build quality and good materials. He started using Goodman when they changed their overall designs in 2006....
My financial research shows that Goodman Manufacturing is now traded in the NYSE - having a Initial Public Offering in 2006....I can only hope that they (if they are INDEED well managed) are trying to compete in the crowded HVAC marketplace on the basis of value: quality/price. Certainly their sales, earnings and margins are strong. Estimated Warranty Claims must be carried on the Balance Sheet as a liability and the next few years will reveal if their strategy is working. In the meantime, I noticed that Fedders is declaring bankrupcy.
Goodman reminds me of Hyundai: a 'cheap brand' from 5-8 years ago that got a foothold in the market by appealing to the price conscious buyer - regardless of quality. To reassure consumers - they put an industry-leading warranty out there....then they aggressively went after the quality issue...vowing to compete with the big boys. Then, the build-quality caught up...now there is an opprortunity to buy a comparable quality product for less....until Carrier, Trane etc - come up with similar formulae.
I've owned Toyotas for years,,,buying one after another with great Total Cost of Ownership. I am considering my first Hyundai now, based on: 1) Market analysis of thousands of buyers and 2) talking with the 'man on the street' locally who have bought Sonatas, driven them for 40K without ANY issues....and a Car and Driver article last month, indicating their 40K test showed a tremendously built car that had virtually no quality issues.
The Brave New World of competition drives on....
I have no professional knowledge with HVAC, but do have some experience with Goodman. I replaced a split unit (Rheem) in my old house with a Goodman. It was a much better unit. I lived there another 5 years and had no problems. I just replaced a 4 ton Bard (13 years old) packaged unit in this house with a Goodman. It has been over 105 degrees here in SC for several days. This unit is running flawlessly even with such high outside temps. I had a great installer, which I am sure has a great deal to do with it. My experiences with Goodman have been great
