7-yo Goodman compressor hard to start, help!!
We recently noticed our A/C unit running all day without cooling. This happened last summer too and it was low freon, no mention of any leak. So tech just replaced the freon and left. Ran fine until this summer and, again, it was not cooling.
This time, the tech said we had a leaking coil. So we have to replace it for about . Fine.
When he got ready to replace the coil and pumped down the freon, he noticed the compressor would not start. So he put a "super booster" or some kind of jump starter on it. He said this was a band-aid measure and that eventually our compressor would die, couldn't say when. Could be months, could be years. Our Goodman is only 7 years old. But we live in Texas, where it gets really hot for a good part of the year.
So the company says our options are:
1. Replace our coil, install the super booster and pray it lasts for another 10 years. Of if the unit does go out, replace the Goodman unit for $.
2. Replace the coil and outdoor unit with a Lennox Puron unit for $
I'm not sure if we should spend so much on an unit we know nothing about as far as reliability and efficiency goes.
What option do you guys recommend? I'm thinking Bryant might be a better choice if we were to replace. Or is Goodman good enough?Last edited by jrbenny; 08-20-2007 at 02:49 PM. Reason: pricing removed...please review the rules

I hope he checked the capacitor when he hung that superboost on it.
If the kickstart got it going, quit worrying about it.

#1. NO PRICING. You're not asking but you might wanna leave it out. (just my opinion)
#2 A Hard Start Kit isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've seen them last for years.
#3 Personally, get the coil replaced that's leaking. Let the condensor ride out.
Good luck, and get a second price, didn't your momma tell you to shop around???

Oops
Sorry, I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to post prices. I'm thinking of just doing the coil and booster and taking our chances. If I'm going to plop down a hefty sum of money for a new outside unit, I want to be sure it's something we want.
I never questioned the A/C repair pricing, but I'm doing some shoppin' around now to see if the original quote was reasonable. Thanks for the advice

At the worst, the system life may be shortened by operating with low refrigerant. Even with that, it should last long enough to be worth repairing.
