    Is there a better replacement?

I have a 20 yr old majestic wood burning fireplace, is there a more efficient one I can replace it with, or is an insert the way to go?

There are some pretty impressive gas inserts ( 80% efficiency ) with large glass viewing areas and there is no mess as with wood.

If you replace it it with ANYTHING that is EPA certified it will be a gigantic improvement in efficiency. Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

I have an Avalon wood insert. The smallest one they make (Pendleton I think) inserted into a regular masonry fireplace. I can usually delay turning on my furnace for several weeks in October/November when I use it.
