    This is what kills homeowners

Do it yourself air conditioning sites like this XXXXXXX make homeowners think everything is so easy. But in reality sites like this are only going to get people who have no clue what they are doing injured or killed. If it was as easy as watching a DVD to install a new system we would all be out of jobs. Besides that you cant trust a website that tells you Goodman is the #1 rated HVAC manufacturer

Installing new refrigeration systems is easy for people who use common sense. Legally, you still need your EPA license if you need to add refrigerant. If you have the tools, it's probably going to be easy for you. This will not put anyone out of a job. There are plenty of people who do not want to do it themselves, and who'd be better off doing overtime at their job and paying someone who has experience. Also, if you don't have the tools, it's probably not worth buying the equipment just to do your own home.

I wish we had more people who did things themselves. Too few people spend the time to learn new things, which is why people kill themselves.

Quite right. Keeps EMT's, docs, nurses, undertakers, and even HVAC pros (they WILL be called to replace the system) in business.
No reserve. No retreat. No regrets.

Spoken by someone who does not have a clue. I rarely find systems installed properly by supposed pros let alone a clueless homeowner working from a video by some one that has no clue.

You are right about one thing I am not losing any money to these people as they would not pay my price in the first place.

I love DIYers. I have made more money from people who have made a lot worse of a mess of their systems then was the original fault because they were so frustrated over their screwing up that they just wanted to pay me and get me out of their lives again.

I don't? Why is it you suggest people use "pros" who you say rarely install the system properly anyway? I've seen plenty of professional and do it yourself work botched and/or shoddy. That doesn't mean it's hard, it just means people don't follow directions or they are lazy. Lots of people do stupid things, but it doesn't mean everyone does. I slap myself in the forehead a few times a week when looking at someones crappy work. Sometimes they knew better, the rest of the time they should have known better if they spent 5 minutes thinking about what they were doing.

See that word "supposed"? That's the operative word, Mikey.

DIY is often funny. I'm a tech in a car dealer and I fix many many things DIY'ers were thinking they were doing "better", doing it themselves........... even independent repair shops that don't know the details of the cars they're dealing with at times............. making money on other's mistakes is nice.

I have EPA 609 cert(yes, I know it's not the same as 608), and access to any refrigerant I want.... but I still paid the "pros" to install my system in my home. I did bring home a gauge set to verify low system charge myself, but I don't have the time to learn and make sure that I really, truely knew the differences of the home a/c system to do a proper system replacement.

Can you get me a 41 lb cylinder of R718.
I think the place I normally get it at, is charging me too much.

I have DIY'd many a vehicle problems. Every once in a while I actually did good. Most times I either repaired/replaced at least one thing that wasn't bad before replacing the right thing, and the other times I just flat out had to give up and let a real pro fix my problem.

Overall, I have probably payed at least twice as much over the years to have the priveledge to bust my knuckles up and frustrate myself fixing my own vehicles.

Amen brother! I had a guy call me for a no-heat (oil) in the middle of Jan (15deg OT) and when I got there he had this huge pile of parts in a box and said he thinks it was one of these.

He must have cleaned the shelf off at Home Cheapo and finally gave up. Actual problem was a broken heat anticipater wire in an old honey t87 round. (and he broke it! when he took the cover off to blow out the dust, lol)

DIYs have been good to me. I can not tell you how many DIYs systems I
have gone back and brought up to speed. Some have actually done a
pretty good job of installing, just did not get it up to top performance.

Some were a disaster, and actually damaged the system installed. I
walked away from those, and told the DIYer the system was never going
to work properly, or last very long. Oh well, so goes life.

Probably because of liability. Not too smart for a pro forum to give DIY links. This is a sue-crazy country.
