Mixing HP81 and OneShot
Okay okay, I know never mix. Someone asked me what would happen *if*. Don't know if he did or not, and was just embarassed or what. He mentioned a reach in freezer.
I'm curious tho - would be the reprocusions?

the EPA test says "don't mix", mixed gases are costly as they require disposal charges. Many guys mix gases"...no big thing" they say, but take the hammer away from these guys and they can't fix a thing. Not knowing is one thing, being proud of not knowing is what these guys are known for.
besides strange pressures, the disposal charges are really high, can't afford that, or the fine!

OK serious answer.......no one knows.
Depending on the ratio of the two refrigerants, the new blend could act any number of ways.
Bad idea any way you cut it.

What replacements are available for HP81
I have an ice machine that is using HP81 and it is the only piece of equipment on our site to use this refrigerant. I am having trouble with the machine, (I'm going to make another thread with some specifics) and it would be nice if oh say 404a was a replacement for HP81.
Of course, if I have to do work involving recovering this machine that means we'll have to buy yet another recovery tank for the 390z of HP81 in this machine
I found this document http://www.refrigerants.dupont.com/S...pdf/h71061.pdf and it appears HP-81 uses a Mineral Oil whereas 404a uses a POE. In my limited knowledge doesn't this mean that 404a would not be a simple replacement for 402b because of the difference in oil?
What is this Hot Shot I have heard about? (I'll do some research myself as time allows.)

R-404 does require POE oil and is incompatible with the mineral oil you are currently using. On ice machines you must also be careful about the port sizes of the hot gas valves when changing refrigerants, I don't think I would recommend changing this one over. HP-81 works very well in this machine and I would stay with it.
HotShot is a replacement blend for medium temp R-12 applications, it will not work in the ice machine you referenced.

Thanks k_fridge, you confirmed what I suspected about HP-81. We will not be able to retrofit and reduce the various number of refrigerants in use.
