Best PTAC for the money
L.G., Amana, GE, or Carrier
I was wandering what brand to get?
what is best for the money.
I am planning to install PTAC units into 1 bed room apartments in Tucson Arizona.

best one I have worked on
Amana makes prob 75% of the ones out there. I have better luck with the Amana brands vers.the carrier and have not worked on any LG yet.The GE I always called them "getting even", they just did not last.

I like the GE 5800. Quiet! 2 motor design so outdoor fan motor only runs with the compressor. Only HP I know of that runs the comp and the backup heat at the same time to save money. Also GE has a service fleet so you don't have to call around to find some sucker to work on them. The newest Amanas are quiet, older ones were rather noisy. The last new Carrier I heard was noisy.

EER vs. SEER
Yes, we have considered mini splits, we opted for PTAC’s due to cost effectiveness
1 PTAC installed …………. $1,200
1 mini split installed ……… $1,600Last edited by pines; 07-20-2007 at 03:19 AM. Reason: wrong text.

What brand of mini-split is involved? I am sure the efficiency of a fujitsu or comparable brand mini-split will make up for a price difference of that much, plus a mini split is sooooo much more quieter than a PTAC and looks better too.
Just MHO.

I haven't had the pleasure of running across a Carrier PTAC yet, but as for Amana, I have had to replace a lot of control boards. The last one was this week, they have made a conversion from the rotary control knobs to push buttons. Maybe they will have less problems with new boards. Has anyone else noticed a problem with these boards?

Check out fujitsu 18rlQ. Rated at 19 SEER and has better filtration.

I checked the price on the fugitsue 19 seer
It is about double the cost of the PTAC after installation.
