zomg RUST =( whatdoido
Got the house 3 months ago, said it had a new A/C (read: they put in a new low quality compressor outside). The air handler started to hum a bit before comming on which brought me to the attic....

then I opened it up... =(

obviously not part of this 'new A/C' the huse had. More pics of the beast:

So I called my home warranty, they came out and replaced the capacitor (stopped the humming), and used CO2 to blow out the drain pipe. They said nothing else was not covered under the warranty.
What do I do from here? Get the drain tray cleaned? Get the drain tray replaced? Get an entire new air handler? Other suggestions?

home ispectors no zero about a/c!!!
when you buy a house always have an AC company inspect the system, usually not more then service call fee and this would have been addressed.
that fau is a piece of crap and should be trashed. i can only imagine how good they did on the outside unit replacement.

how new is the outdoor unit, make, model. Is it 13 SEER. If so, I would suggest matching the air handler to the condensing unit.

You got troubles.......
The AHU is laying in the secondary pan= big problem
Flex duct for the supply=problem
Get a tech to do a massive clean up on the system, then evaluate performance.
Home Inspectors are the biggest scam going.........

I just talked to someone who said I could get a better AHU and it would work fine with the 10 seer compressor outside.
He said what you didn't want to do was get a better compressor than your AHU. Is that true?
Could I just get a 13 SEER AHU in my attic that would work with the 10 SEER compressor outside?

You do NOT want a new compressor. That's a misnomer. If you want a new outdoor unit, if it's straight AC, you would want a new CONDENSER. The compressor is part of and contained within the condensing unit.
At the very least, you should get yourself an indoor unit matched to the outdoor unit. You should get a full sized secondary drain pan and have the new air handler elevated above the bottom of the pan. You should get a new supply and return duct system, sized properly for your system, sealed and insulated so the cool air your system makes arrives in your rooms and not in your attic. And by all means, start all of this with a contractor who automatically, without suggestion or cajoling, does a Manual 'J' load analysis for the home before they suggest any replacement equipment. Here's the question to ask: "I would am thinking of replacing the air conditioning equipment in my home. Could you explain the process your company will take to move to that end?" If they start by saying they do a load analysis, engineering analysis, load calculation, Manual 'J' or anything that's a true analysis, invite them in. If they say anything like "Well we size the equipment based on the square footage of the home" or "we size based on our vast, 400 years of experience in the air conditioning business..." then tell them you've changed your mind and move on to the next one.
Other than that, just run it till it leaks through the ceiling. And skip the insurance company. No self respecting, professional compay, does home warranty repairs. We don't work that cheaply.
If YOU want change, YOU have to first change.
If you are waiting for the 'other guy' to change first, just remember, you're the 'other guy's' other guy. To continue to expect real change when you keep acting the same way as always, is folly. Won't happen. Real change will only happen when a majority of the people change the way they vote!
