Glide.
On paper, R410a's low boiling point makes it look really good for low temp applications. Why is it rarely used for that in practice?
Glide.
Head pressure.
Mass flow is too low at lower pressure, not enough of that junk gets pumped around to do any work
It puts the compressor to close to the edge of the operating envelope, and efficiency is worse vs 404A or 407A.
FWIW My 410 AC ran a low head
Worked on some 410 glycol chillers that ran low head too.
Bet you will see some more 410 refrigeration when they come for 134 and 404

Here is a 410 vs 404 study on a Hussman
Looks like the just dropped it in with no other mods.

So it looks like that while it's indeed efficient, it has the problem of high discharge temperature just like R22.
I have worked on an old (2005 vintage or so) rackmount AMD computer that used R410a to chill its CPU. (Nothing wrong with the refrigeration stuff, thankfully!) It had what appears to be a two stage horizontal rotary compressor with a VFD that does what it could to hold the CPU temperature at -40C or so. It was only a single core but at 4.3GHz, it held up pretty well against the low end Xeons (2011 vintage) with single threaded apps. I'm guessing that the two stage compression is a workaround for the high compression ratio and that there's an intercooler buried somewhere in all the plumbing. (No pictures, since the lab it was in has a policy against taking pictures.)
Ironic timing.., Manitowoc announced today they are utilizing 410a in their new line of ice machines..
Yeah, for a -10 freezer, different story.

410a is about 30% more efficient, at low temperatures than 404a, compressor ratios are almost identical, 410a head pressure runs 100psi or so higher than 404a, I think it would make a good low temp refrigerant and the price has come down to what r-22 was back in the 90s.
I'm all for carring one color tank for a change lol
