yes. just use the first stage w1 terminal.
Can I use a 2 stage heat thermostat on a system with a 1 stage heat unit?
yes. just use the first stage w1 terminal.
Hmmm. Other sites I've asked this question on don't seem so sure.
Anyone else have an opinion?

Considering most people who post on this forum earn a living doing HVAC work, I think it's safe to say they're not lying to you or guessing.
I've used multistage stats on single stage equipment many times, no problem.
Sorry, I was doubting anyones word, just looking for some sort of concensus.
Thanks for all your quick replies.
Yes, have done it before and will do it again.
Like a/c pro said. Use w1 for the heat.
“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”

Add my name to the list of "Yes" votes. Put another way; the 2-stage calls 1-stage on, well, FIRST. That's why it's called first stage. Get it? Then if the temperature changes another degree away from set-point, second stage kicks in. Now what if you don't have a second stage? The t-stat doesn't know that but it just keeps on calling for heat on both stages until it's satisfied. I assume sincel you're asking, you have a 2-stage stat already. So read the application instructions. If it doesn't say you 'can't', then you can. I don't think I've ever seen one that you can't use of a 1-stage system. Some of the new digital ones you have to go into the contractors set-up mode to tell it whether it's a 1-stage (default usually) or 2-stage.
If YOU want change, YOU have to first change.
If you are waiting for the 'other guy' to change first, just remember, you're the 'other guy's' other guy. To continue to expect real change when you keep acting the same way as always, is folly. Won't happen. Real change will only happen when a majority of the people change the way they vote!
