Hmm Choosing a Thermostat for a 1 Gang Box

We need a thermostat that can be operated by people who do not speak English.

Honeywell’s wide screen 500 will not work because it is not setup to be mounted to a standard vertical 1 gang box.

We will have Heat pumps with heat strips.

We are in a predominantly Spanish speaking neighborhood, with lower end apartment housing. The unit needs to be sturdy and able to take physical abuse.

You can get a deco plate for it, that will allow it to be mounted to a vertical box.

    Hmm Braeburn

I don’t understand exactly what the deco plate would look like. And I am afraid it would not be as strong as I would like it to be.

We are considering using a Braeburn 3??? It is square and fits on the box. It looks good but, I don’t like the fact that to adjust the temperature I have to hold down the button for about 2 seconds to change the mode to lower or raise the temperature setting. I don’t want to explain how to use it to the tenants.

Go to the supply house and look at the deco plate.

Probably a bit more than what you're looking at spending, but if you want something they can't rip off the wall, Totaline's flush-mount thermostat might be the answer:

    Model # P374-1100FM - Non-programmable
    Model # P374-2200FM - Programmable

Yea the # P374-1100FM is great. It seems to retail for $120- $140. And you are right it is not within our budget. I need to find one about half that price.

Been awhile since I've seen one, but maybe the Honeywell digital round 'stat...or maybe even one of the analog T87's. They can take quite a bit of abuse and hundreds of thousands of them are still chugging away across America today, some definitely older than me! If it doesn't cover the J-box entirely, I know Honeywell has trim rings for those stats which will.
