About time someone put out a realistic view of hacking a BMS.

    Good job.

    Nice article.
Now if we (in the controls industry) can convince Network Management that VPN's and VLAN's are the first line of defense (and my preference) and the Operating personnel that "Strong Passwords" (8 characters) are intended to protect them and not interfere with their typical work habits we will be getting somewhere.

IT always wants Super Strong Passwords (10-14 characters, you know what I mean) that are , IMO, absolutely impossible to remember. And Ops want simple passwords that are Sooo simple that they have to write them, like "Hvac123", on the wall next to their Access Machines.

There has to be a happy compromise that all three groups (contractors, IT people and Ops) can live and work with.
If sense were so common everyone would have it !

Use lastpass and generate passwords that are stupid long if you like.

    orion242,
I'll "pass" on lastpass. Sombody hacked the personal email account so now I only save 1 password on the PC and thats only because the host makes me change it every 14 days, what a pain.

Going old school and either encripting them in my pocket note pad or simply remembering them. The one's IT generates are way too complex. So much so I have to write them down and still get them wrong sometimes. Thanks anyway.

Glad you liked the article, guys. I put together the monthly Networked Controls Plus newsletter for HPAC Engineering magazine (this month's version is here: http://enewspro.penton.com/preview/h...urrent/display) and I am always looking for good controls info to share with our readers. Feel free to contact me at Contracting Business 216-931-9752 if there are any controls topics you'd like to read about (or anything you'd like to submit)! Thanks.
