Just pick the thing up making sure you stay clear of the business end. Watch those claws on the feet too. Once you catch one, put it is a metal wash tub for transporting.

My grandfather used to catch them with a steel cage and cook them. Not much meat but really good. Tastes a little like chicken

You could get lucky and some Asians move in near the pond.

The brother's father in law has a large pond. We sit on the deck and wait.... He hits the shell, nothing. Then just hands me the rifle. Head shot at 50 yards. Two days later its a floater.

Be a man
Dive in there and get him. Dive shallow though. Please.
Restle him to the top. Drag him in. Your prize and bragging rights.

Go on the internet, there are a lot of plans for turtle traps. The best ones for snappers are the one with a wedge shaped entrance below the water line. Snappers are pretty smart so we would make the wedge small end smaller than their tipical shell and put it on hinges held in the semi closed position by screen door springs. The snapper would see the opening push into it, spreading the opening and the springs would bring it back to a semi closed position. PS Chicken wire is not heavy enough for snappers, need to use the fencing fabric with the rectangle holes. Also they will bite thru wire ties.
