A Question on Reversing Valves and Compressors.

Firstly, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read and potentially answer my question!

My first question is, how exactly do reversing valves affect compressors in a 2.5 Ton heat pump system? If a reversing valve is not closing all the way properly, does it cause damage relating to the compressor? I'm green to AC units and would really appreciate your expertise to educate myself on this a little more. If a 3b/2bth sized apartment is maintaining somewhere around 80-85F even though the unit is filled with Freon, would replacing a piece such as the reversing valve have a tremendous effect on the temperature the apartment would be able to maintain or could there hypothetically be a larger problem?

    Thanks again professionals!

Usually when a reversing valve fails, you have no cooling. So problem is most likely something else.

Techs need to take super heat and sub cooling readings to find the real problem.

If the reversing valve is not working then yes it would have a tremendous effect on how well the unit cooled the apartment if it was replaced.

If a reversing valve was leaking by it would have a definite detrimental affect on the cooling capabilities of the unit BUT the only way to diagnose such a problem is for a qualified technician to troubleshoot / diagnose the actual problem.
