just a stupid question, but did you put initial charge (liquid) in the high side 1st with the system off, then started compressor and throttled liquid into suction, or did you charge with the bottle upright?

I can't imagine this being a refrigeration problem if the pressures remain the same up to the point of the compressor shutting off. If high and low pressure cut outs are present, the gauges would show a rise or drop in pressure leading up to the failure. Does the contactor release when the compressor shuts off? Could be something within the defrost board? Although I don't think those boards from the late 80's were very sophisticated

Contactor does not release when compressor shuts off. The board was replaced about a year ago, and when I was doing a routine maintenance on it, I heard it making a clicking sound but could not figure out why, and since it appeared to be running normal at the time I ignored the issue.. But I still have not had a chance to ohm out the compressor, will do tomorrow.

Yeah I added charge to liquid side, and then turned system on and throttled into suction side, but I was having problems from the first time I started throttling liquid into suction side because of how quickly the compressor was shutting off. I'm starting to think that board might be part of the problem.
