A/C added to existing Trane
My daughter bought a house that has a Trane XR90 gas furnace but no A/C. Is it possible to add A/C from another manufacturer to this unit? The previous owner said they paid $300 extra to make it easier to add A/C later but had no idea what that meant. There certainly is no A-coil installed. Any ideas? The reason I asked about the non-Trane A/C is because I have an installer that is very trusted and reliable, but he does not handle Trane (Amana and Goodman primarily). I also asked my daughter what the model number is but she couldn't find is on the unit. Any ideas where the model and s/n is located on a Trane furnace? Bottom line, are we asking for problems if we mix manufacturers?

Any manu. can be installed onto it. M# & S# inside cabinet. Are you sure ther's no A coil? Look for 2 pipes comming out of the discharge ductwork.

I am absolutely sure there is no A-coil. She sent me pictures and the only thing on top of the furnace is a new sheet metal duct to adapt the new furnace to the old larger duct work. No pipes protruding anywhere out of the duct.

equipment
The furnace is only being used as the air handler. You can put any mfr a/c system on it, just be sure the furnace can handle the cfm requiremnts for cooling. It is not a good idea to mis-match the cooling equipment.

Absolutely OK to use another brand. We even sold 2 branded systems for many years. Key is that the indoor coil matches what's outdoors and as has already been said, you move the right air for the size A/C.
Still wonder what she paid $300 for if she didn't get a coil already. $300 to pull 5 wire to the stat instead of 2 conductor?

Is is possible that the $300 they paid may have been for an electrical circuit and disconnect outside at the possible location? We have subcontracted electricians to update electrical for a new furnace install and sometimes the customer opts to pay extra to just get the electrical all done at once.

Good point, or a lineset now that you mention it.

Nope. No line set or wiring. Is there a possibility the control board in the furnace has an upgrade to support A/C?

Maybe the ductwork out of the top of the furnace is already set up to slide an uncased coil in.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

I don't see anything either. Otherwise, a good install that the Trane dealer has done.
Maybe the dealer was going to put a coil, and and forgot about it? Who knows...

nice looking install. Is there any particular reason your daughter doesn't want to use the company that installed the furnace? Looks like they did a decent job. The extra cash on original install may have been for a larger size furnace.
They may have opted for a larger-than-needed furnace in order to get a blower large enough to handle the airflow requirements for air conditioning that house.
That looks like a Honeywell F-series electronic air cleaner cabinet without the power source installed. Honeywell makes media filter cartridges that fit into this cabinet, it's likely that's what yours is intended for.
