Installing suction valve on a Carrier 30hxc

Has anyone ever done this? We need to change the internal oil filter But our machines do not have the suction cut off valve. Cant see why this is an "option". So we have to pull the gas every time we do oil filter change. If anyone has any insight on this or has installed the valve give me a shout. Thanks.

Why do you have to pull the gas every time you do a filter change? I've done many filter changes by pumping the unit down. Also how would you install a suction valve when the compressor is sitting on the suction line on top of the chiller barrel?

My Tech suggested it. Pulling the gas then rigging the compressor off the barrel then installing it. When I was in the field all of my screws had the valve. Ill look into pumping it down. Thanks for your help.

All that work isn't necessary when it can easily be pumped down.

internal oil filter has a check valve. you only need to isolate the oil line. if check valve leaks then pump it down and then change the check valve also. as far as adding the suction shut off valve it is not hard just raise the compressor about a foot or so and install it.

I was not trying to call you out...
I was trying to determine if you are simply closing the liquid line and letting the compressor empty the cooler of refrigerant while running, or are you isolating the compressor and using a pump out unit to transfer gas to the condenser??
my poor little brain went into overload thinking of all the possibilities.....lol

No need to install the suction service valve just change the filter using the procedure in the book using the external oil filter instructions.

If you insist on the valve the compressor removal is a must.
Seems like too much work to me.

    Mountains out of mole hills.
I bet Carrier paid a lot of money to have that procedure written and some choose not to read it.
Below is the procedure that Carrier has on page 54 of the OIM. Happy reading.

    REPLACING THE EXTERNAL OIL FILTER
Fully front seat (close) the angle valves on the filter and at
the compressor. Connect a charging hose to the oil pressure
bleed port and drain the oil trapped between service valves. A
quart (liter) of oil is typically what is removed during this process.
    Remove the charging hose.
Unscrew the nut from the other side of the filter and remove
the old filter. Remove protective plastic caps from new filter
and install. Draw a vacuum at the bleed port. Remove charging
hose. Open angle valve enough to let oil flow. Check both fittings
for leaks and repair if necessary. Backseat angle valve
REPLACING THE INTERNAL OIL FILTER — Close the
service valves at the compressor and drain the oil using the
bleed port. If the oil pressure does not bleed off using this
method it will be necessary to remove the entire circuit charge.
Using a 3/4-in. Allen wrench, remove the internal filter access
cover (see Fig. 22). Remove the old filter. Replacement filters
(one for each compressor) are factory supplied to cover the
first changeout. After that, filters are field supplied. Lightly oil
O-ring in the filter and install with filter open end first into the
housing. Replace access cover and retorque to 75 ft-lb
(101 N-m). Follow procedure in previous section for opening
angle valve and purging lines. Check for leaks and repair if
    necessary.
