I've seen some threads here about NATE, with a variety of (interesting) opinions expressed. Would anyone here care to tell me what they think of Building Performance Institute certification?
The reason I ask is that I've had a few contractors who are BPI approved (a requirement for NY state's energy star assistance program) come to my house for estimates and one of them told me that it doesn't really mean a lot since a lot of people just pay the fee, go through the training but that it's no assurance of a quality job. And yes, I realize there's no such thing as an iron-clad assurance of anything.
I'm just wondering if this designation really provides any meaningful screening of contractors for competence, or if it's just an arbitrary requirement that NY State relies on for its energy assistance program.
