    Looks like a hole.

I had some 21' black iron that had a hole last year, got lucky and some leak seek dripped down and ran over the hole from a 90* we were checking.

I have actually seen a hole just like that in a carrier RTU on the discharge line. The unit was 5-6 yrs old and never had any issues, then all sudden it was out of gas and i found the hole. It did not look like it was drilled, i think it naturally occurred somehow, maybe the copper was thin in that part and worn down. I think that's what happened in the pic above.

I would be concerned with where the copper that used to fill the hole went...

    Plugged txv or worse...

Hole looks 'clean' around the edges...

My guess is intentional... however that is only a guess from a picture.

If it were me, and time allowed, I would cut out the section of CO line (a few inches of tubing would be enough), repair the cut out place, and bring the piece back to the shop for examination.

Might learn something... hopefully not something one does not want to know.

It looks very intentional to me. A few years back, I ran across a neighborhood issue with a company lacking integrity. They actually got caught drilling holes in line sets and then offering service to repair it. No telling for sure, but it doesn't look like weak copper from the image you posted.

Perhaps the current from a nearby lightning strike passed thru it.
