help pumping a freezer down

I closed the liquid line and turned unit on, suction gauge showed it being pulled to a vaccuum but liquid gauge would not pump down, what am i doing wrong? to much gas in unit?

Where are you taking the liquid line pressure?

if you closed off the LL service valve ( not at compressor ) and pumped the unit down with the LLSV shut and had your manifold high side on the service port after the LL service valve, you won't detect a change because the LLSV is holding a charge in the liq. line. you have to manually open the LLSV w/ a strong magnet or energize it to remove all of the charge. don't run the comp too long in a vac. you will nuke the windings.

Depending on the kind of service valve you have on the receiver, when you front seat the valve your guage port is live to the tank not the line.
This is the most common style of receiver king valve.
