techs always fight the watch and whine it up....everytime it comes around...then you have the female in service who tells you don't plan anything the weekend is going to be a scorcher....if I wlak in on anything I never work on I get the work invoice from the last brain surgeon on it then call the SM....."hey do you want me on this thing"or get fred out who was here Friday...love it..works everytime.if I stay there it locks me up from taking other calls and the SM is the whippn' post..for the weekend...

after introducing yourself at an interview... first question is how often do i get the watch /night service, and how much do you pay to mentally be on stand by????..that sets the tone for the reset of the interview...

I used to hate those, the "be ready to be on call but dont expect on call pay" weekends until i realized they were the best times to go to atlantic city.

I worked at company for 26 years. It was just me and the boss. Luckily, I was only on call every other week from Friday after work to Monday morning. When the boss went on vacation or needed time off, I was it. So, overall, it wasn't too bad.

Then, for a year, I went to work for a burger chain. I was on call every 5 weeks for a week at a time. The restaurants are open 24/7/365, so I would get called out at all hours of the day and night, and would still be expected to work my normal hours during the day. Not only did I do the A/C and refrigeration, we were responsible for everything in the restaurant including fryers, grills, bun toasters, hot wells, soda dispensing equipment (Multiplex), lighting, plumbing, painting, etc. You name it, we worked on it. The pay was great, but the job sucked. I quit.

Now, I work for a school district taking care of five kitchens. I still take care of everything in the kitchen, but it's nothing compared to the burger chain. I'm on call every 10 weeks, which consists only going in if there is an emergency of some kind, which isn't very often. We get comp time for carrying the phone and comp time for drive time and actual time we're on campus. I wish I had found this job 25 years ago.

How easy is it to ask another technto switch on call with you? Our shop, with the exception of me and one other tech, is like pulling teeth. We have a great shop but i feel it can be very selfish at times. Its funny though because when those other guy call me i already know what they are calling for. But if i call them they have there entire year already planned.

I was on-call every other week because we had 2 techs. The other one up and quit last Wednesday and I am now on call for the foreseeable future. I hope we get some help soon. Every other week was bad enough.

There is one guy that I trade with once in a while, its usually no big deal. As far as the others its worse than pulling teeth.

It will probably cost you. I think at the last shop I worked at it was 150% of the gross amount for being on call. So if standby pay just for being on call was $120, it would cost you $180 to trade for the week with whoever was willing to accept. Peak of the summer it was anything goes.
