    Question Trane RTAC EXV Replacement

    I am going to be replacing an EXV in a few days. I need find out if any one has replaced one before?
    I have replaced a few boards before. I have Techview to bind the components.
    I've tried with Trane tech support and I was told the instructions come with the EXV.
    I also was told that I will need to remove all refrigerant to replace the EXV. Will I need to remove the refrigerant?
    Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    No need to remove all refrigerant, you can pump it down. No instructions come with EXV but you can follow standard refrigeration practices.

    Like R123 said, you can pump it down to make the repair. Do not power up the EXV before you install it. Use a back-up wrench and don't over-tighten the EXV in the valve body.

    Not if it doesnt have a suction valve and in the early days of the RTAC it was an option . Why anyone would order it without valves is beyond me but ??????

    You can still pump it down without the suction valve. As a mater of fact, I've replaced many leaking suction valves. After it pumps down, close the discharge and oil valves.

    Thanks for all replies.
    I also found out today that the EXV is shorted. And the fuses on the board (EXV board, I am assuming) would blow.
    I was not the tech that condemned the parts. So, with that said, I don't think I can pump it down. Or can I? Thru TechView? I am going out there Friday to do some work on a couple VAVs. While I am there I will be able to see if there are valves on the chiller.

    Attach the replacement valve while still in the body and bind it. This will allow you to pump down the circuit. There is a service valve upstream of the EXV. Close it then pump down the circuit. Power down the chiller and replace the valve.

    There is no EXV board, the EXV is a LLID and communicates directly with the DynaView. If the EXV is shorted and blowing the 3 amp fuse on the power supply, then you can disconnect the EXV and pump the circuit down without the EXV being operational. If the EXV is closed, then the refrigerant in the liquid line between the liquid line service valve and EXV will still be there so you will have to deal with that. There will be valves on the chiller and you can pump the circuit down through the DynaView (Service Pumpdown in the settings menu), or through TechView. Don't forget to close the oil scavenger line valve before you pump it down.

    Also, you only need to buy the EXV motor, not the whole valve. The motor just screws into the body.
    Also, don't ever power up the EXV without it in the body.

    I don't want to give any more info than this in the open chiller forum. You need to get your post count up to 15 and apply for pro membership.

    To my understanding we just ordered the EXV motor.
    R123 , or any one. Can you possibly tell me where the oil scavenger line is to valve off? I need to read up as to apply for pro. Thanks

    3/8 line on bottom of evap.
