Lennox G 51 MP Gas Furnace
Hi, I am looking to find where I can down load a service manual for the Lennox G 51 MP - 600 - 135 - 01 Furnace.
I had to call for service Sunday 2-04-07 he was in the house 20 minutes and the charge was $258.00. I am retired and that is hard to swallow

What did he fix? I know Lennox parts can be expensive.

Since it's a Lennox, those manuals are Dave's. We gotta ask Dave. And Dave's not here man.
The installer should be able to get you the book.Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

Is there travel time involved? What about mileage, and did he replace any parts. I don't think there are any G51's that are over 5 years old, so the part should have been under warranty.

Did you ask up front what the charges would be for coming out on Sunday? It can get steep as you have seen. I would have waited until Monday.

Sunday emergency calls are charged at double time rate at most shops, and they can be very expensive. Did you ask the price for a call out? I always give the customer some idea about the cost for the first hour, we charge from the time we leave home until we return. About any call will cost a couple of hours time when drive time is included. I will cut a little off the driving time if it is a good customer or a real nice new one! If the customer gives me any attitude I always am real cool about it, but then they pay the full rate all the way

Yes I asked the price and I was quoted $180.00 plus parts, no parts were used all he did was clean the flame sensor with a piece of steel wool. He was in the house about 15 minutes.

It seems you think you were misquoted, or not properly charged. Based on the information you've provided, could be a valid argument. It sounds like a flat rate setup where you pay the 180 for a diagnostic fee and the rest was labor for cleaning the sensor. Did you call the business back during regular business hours and present your argument to the owner/manager?
Still not sure how the service manual comes into play. Using steel wool to clean the sensor is standard procedure. They probably checked the before and after flame signal strength also. There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action....Mark Twain

That's why you need to have your equipment serviced on a regular basis, to avoid those costly after hours calls.
Let me ask you a question, how much would you charge a customer if you were an employer and had to pay a technician overtime all weekend to service peoples equipment that could have been serviced in the fall at a reduced rate?

I was in that position with a company that serviced newspaper industry and we had calls that were on overtime but I did not take advantage of the situation I paid my service people well but it did not cost the company any more so I was fair in the charge.
$180.00 Plus a service charge of $48.00 plus a diagnostic charge of $28.00 seams a lot excessive. but other then that I am still looking for a service manual which I am sure that I can do some of the work on my furnace myself.
Thanks Dick
