Could anyone recommend a setup for recovering a large amount of refrigerant quickly? I currently use a Promax RG6000 which is good but very slow.

Don't use the recovery machine for large amounts of refrigerant removal, providing that the machine itself still runs.

I'm wondering if there is a recovery machine that would be able to remove 100lb quickly.
The most efficient machine I know of for mid volume recovery tasks would be an Appion G5-twin.
I would set it up in a 'push-pull' arrangement. Appions tend to pump liquid very efficiently, yet they are a bit slow cleaning the gas out on a hot day. I use a cooler after the recover pump;

Choose your contractor wisely!
We have an ice machine at the office that comes in handy. We took 2 55 falling antifreeze barrels and cut both the top and bottom off of one of them, then the top off the other. We put the 125 lb cylinder in the barrels and pack it with ice. Then run water over all of it and it works pretty fast.
I bet these other guys have some better tricks....
Yes the unit I'm working on is running. I have 50lb recovery tanks. Could I attach a line from the unit liquid reciever to the liquid tank port and a line from a suction port to the tank vapor port and fill the tank with liquid from the reciever by gently bleeding the vapor to suction port? Would that be a quicker way?
you have to be careful doing that because you are also removing/storing the oil from the unit. the appion works pretty good and it is light weight. if you have access to the liquid receiver, then push-pull it and you will get it done pretty quickly. also, more tanks helps. if you have 100# to remove, it will take a long time using 2-50# tanks...take up 4-50# tanks and the recovery will go much faster.

dry ice packing the recovery drum works very well for speeding the recovery process. also i have seen people use those "sub coolers" not sure if they are an available product or not but i have seen maybe 25 feet of copper coiled submerged in ice water attached to the discharge of the recovery machine. i would really think that a non leaking A coil submerged in ice water on the discharge would work great.
