    Fireplace fubar!

I mostly deal with commercial refer these days, but company asked me to go on a residential gas fireplace venting call. Amazing 6,000 sq ft home, only 4 years old, with 3 fireplaces all done like this. I don't think that's ok.

Has all the signs of either one trade not knowing what they can or can't do when it comes to gas appliance vents or....... someone didn't like the looks of the ugly vents and threatened someone to either cover it up or else. And amazingly enough, the person doing the threatening is now out of money and couldn't finish it. Of course there is always the possibility that the homeowner did it themselves.
Use the biggest hammer you like, pounding a square peg into a round hole does not equal a proper fit.

Looks like it has a top over the brick work. Otherwise rain will be pouring down in there.

I have installed fireplaces for the past 15 years and believe it or not I have come across this several times. After the tin top was installed on the chase the builder would change from a sided chase to a stucco or brick, the masons would remove the tin top and not tell anyone. Always amazed me what kind of damage a "little" water could do

That chimney has no flashing around it either. Does the rain run down underneath the shingles?

How bout the osb exposed to the elements, getting wet melts the glue in that stuff pretty quick. If that was in wi, I wouldn't expect it to last more then one winter.
