Good thing there's no evidence of spillage.
Use the biggest hammer you like, pounding a square peg into a round hole does not equal a proper fit.

how does that sideways set up work?

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and stamps EVER.
Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals". Their stated reason for this policy "... the animals become dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

There are two draw vents on the flue. The QD's are too low on the water line also... when the heater comes on and the aldehyde spill it reacts with the metal of the QD's and corrode. Clean up will be a breeze.... Not

Given the circumstances... I would not be surprised if this mess was left until it sprung a leak...

Then the owner will gripe about:
    *Bad products
    *Expensive repairs

    Or DIY it.

Regardless... I hope there are not kids growing up in that house... results could be bad.

Ah...I see. I take it condensation issues make it worse on the cold water side?

See the white powder near the cold water inlet? This white powder is an indication of acidic water turned by the alkaline in the aldehyde. Your reasoning would be correct.
