1) Content producers have been buying politicians left and right, in North America, Europe and Asia in order to introduce laws blocking the flow of information (eternal Disney-style copyright, extended patents, being able to patent everything and anything, being able tu threaten lawsuits without disclosing patents, tougher enforcement, communication surveillance). For example, Microsoft has been able to extort license fees for Android devices over still undisclosed "patent violations", then look at the piracy laws and measures used to "combat piracy".
2) The dumb masses will easily be astroturfed into supporting legislation blocking this technology as soon as something like the Liberator is reported to have been used in a crime.
The problem is that this technology will create a serious shift in the balance of power between the masses (us) and the elites. We won't be nearly as dependent on the goods and services that they control to a great extent.
