welcome to the forum!
Hello everyone, I'm soon to be new in HVAC field. Was in the foundary business all my life, work getting slow, getting laid-off, just wasn't working for me anymore. So that's when I decided to go back to school and become an HVAC tech. It's exciting and scary all at the same time, scary as in being 40 yrs old and going into something new, and excited about all the different challenges it's going to bring. My instructor says he's been doing this for 30 some years and is still trying to learn everything. Ready to go forward.

Welcome to the Forum.
thanks for the warm welcomes everyone. it's feels good to be in a new field of work.
I got out of trade school at 37. I will be 57 next month.
Customers (or clients, as I call them) are relieved when they see confidence in a service guy. A little gray hair never hurt, either.
You don't have to let them know you're new to the trade. As you collect knowledge you will develop your confidence level.
They also like to see the old guy with his old tools as opposed to a young guy with brand new tools fumbling on their dime!
I don't think you are ever too old to learn. Just graduated from school this May at age 60. I was just like you, scared at first. But once I had a little understanging of the refigeration cycle and latent heat things calmed down and I really enjoyed it.
Good luck and enjoy school.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
I hired a 45 yr old apprentice 5 years ago, he was the best apprentice I ever worked with, he had the work ethic that so hard to find in the younger generations.. I say congratulations on joining a great profession. I agree with your instructor, I've been in the industry for 20 years now and I'm still learning, as with everything things are always changing.
Good luck!
Being an HVACR tech is like being a medical doctor. There are many different things you can specialize in or you can be the guy who knows a little about everything. Just be patient with yourself and keep an opened mind. If you find an interest in a certain part of the HVACR field then go for it, Study, practise, learn, repeat. If you know the basics of everything but are awesome at a couple different things you will become the guy they call for that type of equipment and you will be known to be reliable. The trade is always progressing in technology and the costumers are always changing. A good technician is one that accepts change and grows with the trade. Good Luck.
