    Thanks to everyone for great help here. A local repair shop that's been around for many years looked at it and said it sounds like a universal motor might do the trick. After some testing, it turned out to be a dead spot on the motor was making it hard to start once in a while. That was the source of the odd noise and smell. With a new motor and cap for $300 installed, everything is fine now. I ordered an extra carbon monoxide detector, choosing a model recommended by the power company guy that did the gas leak check.

    you WILL be calling them, or someone else, to replace that motor soon.

    let them know it is a Pulse and they can order the OEM motor, it NEEDS it, NOT a universal!!!

    Please expand on that: what is different about a blower motor on a pulse furnace?
