auto hvac question,...dont know where to ask , . . .
ive got a mobile/automotive hvac question, custom application.
would anyone here be able to assist? i realise this forum seems to be not mobile or auto, but i have no idea where to find help on mobile auto hvac question.
i'll throw this out here and maybe someone knowledgable will be willing to assist....
im a four wheel drive enthusiast. im building an expo rig,.. a truck for long distance exploring and vacationing/camping.
its a 1987 toyota 4runner, factory a/c.
im swapping in a mercedes five cyl diesel ( om617 )
the mercedes motor has a york single cylinder vertical a/c compressor. (other than the obvious custom ac hoses, thats not an issue)
what do i need to do or take into consideration for adapting the york compressor for use with the toyota a/c system reliably. how would i calculate charge and amount of oil etc. i am an auto tech, but limited a/c experience. ive got evac recharge equipment. the truck is already converted to r134a.
if this is a bad place to ask for help, can anyone refer me to a more appropriate forum or source for custom a/c in my situation?

Oil charge info should be easy to find for that compressor..... but as far as charging it all up...... might just have to wing it and charge it as if you didnt have any info.

Get a flat tube design condenser for that 134. The ol round tube ones dont expel enough heat. Poke around the junkyards and get something off a late car like in the 2000 and up.
Cut a line and let some oil drip out to make sure its nice and clean. Many will have yellow dye , no problem , just dont get one thats burnt colored oil.
Pull the orafice if you can , to inspect the screen. If its full of crap ,move on to the next. If the screen has crap in it , so does the cond. That means the compressor destructed and sent crap all through it.
And NO , you can never get the cond clean with a flush. Been there got the t-shirt.
Then seal off the areas on sides and top when you attach to car.... between radiator and cond. I use foam. You want all of the air pulled THROUGH the cond , not around it .
thanks for the auto forum idea corny, and the link. ive hit just about every 4unner, 4x4, or truck forum out there, and am a member of lots of them... most who have done the swap , havent posted anything about a/c, . . . likely deleted it.
as for the condenser, snapperhead, the one in my 4runner is newish,... but you figure it would be a weak link? i will pull a parts cat and start looking at dimensions. im a mechanic at a chrysler dealer, i do get a decent price on parts, new would likely be a better option. i will be space limited, as i will be stuffing an intercooler up there, and there will be a bit of frontal area given up by the placement of my 8274 warn winch. but i will see what i can find. im assuming the biggest i can fit in there would be better?

edit: i plan on efficient electric fans. not the fan on the engine, would that be a factor in possibly being able to use a smaller one if i had space limitations?
You cant go too big on a condenser to work good ..... only too small , then you find yourself kicking yourself because the head is so high and its not even 100 deg out yet ....

I've had a few 'Yodas, and I sometimes visit Toyotanation. Someone there might have some recommends, based on the vehicle.
You might also consider the MACS, Mobile Air Conditioning Society, based near Lansdale, Pa. There may be someone there that enjoys talking about custom applications.

Since the Toyota Compressor is a Pulley and a Bracket to make it work. Wouldn't it be easier to have a custom made bracket made to adapt the Toyota Compressor to the Mercedes Engine? BTW I don't know why you'd do this, as the Toyota engine are practically bullet proof. The Mercedes engines can get real fical about the quality of the fuel. Plus a lot of other issues. Make sure you put a manual fuel cut-off on that Diesel, I've seen some real nasty run aways.
it would be simpler to not have to fab the bracketry for the ac compressor if i can avoid it. i will if i have to.

and as for the runaway concern you express, the fuel cut off will not prevent that. positive air shut off is the only way to eliminate the threat of a runaway diesel engine.
Did you look for a sight glass on the reciever?
on the mercedes? i'm hoping to use just the compressor, anything else that i use, that isn't already on my truck, will be new
