If they would give up compromising with the libs, and stick to the traditional values and principals, they might stand a chance....

Doubt it. The traditional values and principals are the things that scare people away. If they just stuck to making the country a better place to do business and stayed out of peoples lives (their version of morality, abortion and the like) they would win. No need to bribe people, just leave them alone. Just my personal view.

Go smoke another bowl you libertarian whack job. I don't care if every last poster on this board is a libertarian, and I get banned from this board. You people are deceived. You think the prosperity of this nation was due to how smart our government was and capitalism? Is so, then why is this nation being destroyed before our very eyes? And printer2, I'm not talking about your socialist country. I'm talking about the USA. If our government was so great, why does congress have a 9% approval rating? If capitalism is so great, why is the middle class being destroyed and our jobs being shipped to China & Mexico? The fact is that this nation was a Christian nation from the beginning, and that is why our government worked so well and that is what made capitalism work so well. You take that foundation out of America and our government falls flat on its face and so does our form of capitalism.

But all you libertarians that don't want to acknowledge that, please go smoke another bowl tonight and let all your troubles melt away. You don't have to know the truth if you don't want to.

Printer hit the nail on the head. A Lot of my generation and younger agree with a lot of the business and economic view points of the republican party but are turned off by the moral posturing of the republicans. The sad thing is that apparently people are forgetting that most politicians are in it for only their own power and don't get that they are being played by both sides.

Given all the countries in the world Canada is probably more similar to the USA than any other country. And because of that parallels can be drawn between our societies even with the differences. We have had our love affair with liberal governments in the 70's, bounced back and forth between them and conservatives in the 80's, got into a lot of debt, did the free trade thing, many of the same things your country has gone through. One thing our politicians did do is tackle our debt in the 90's, oddly enough done under a Liberal government.

Part of the reason the Liberals were in power was because the right were seen as only catering to their business buddies, we even had the right splinter in two with the old established party and a more fundamentalist party that believed in, well old time values. Eventually the two got back together and rebuilt the party but the general public was skittish on giving them the reigns of power as we did not want changes to our society but just wanted the country to run better.

So today we have a Prime Minister who keeps a tight leash on his party, at first I did not trust him as he is a big control freak and he would probably not have a problem with being given dictatorial powers. But given that he has fringe right wing elements in his party that want to do a dramatic change to society (as an example a few politicians tried to open the abortion debate a month ago even though the PM said during the election they will not go there but that the economy is their focus) his tight grip might not be a bad thing.

In general our society does not want the government to get bogged down in that discussion but rather it focus on the economy. And that is exactly what the PM is doing. He is using some heavy handed methods of doing it that I do not approve of, stifling political debate on the changes, but generally I approve of the changes as they will help our economy grow in the future. Of course there are those that think we should not exploit this land to create greater wealth but on a whole people are behind him.

Now if your republican party took that approach, just focus on the economy and reducing government's overlap dealing with business, I am sure more people will get behind them. I use my country's current political condition as an example because I do not think we are too different than you.
