    Any Siemens workers?

    I am in the process of interviewing for a Systems Specialist 1 position. I currently work for a sub-contractor company that works on JCI parts and with JCI employees. How do Siemens parts differ from JCI? And for those who worked for JCI and switched to Siemens, is it better or worse?

    The parts are very similar. Somewhat more stream lined. They have PXCs that are smaller than FECs, NCEs or NXEs. The coding language is dramatically different. PPCL is text based with no graphical portion. Siemens has ASC devices that are locked to a type, like VAV, RTU or such, these are called TECs.

    As for the differences it all has to do with the management. They are both big corporations and as such act accordingly. For me the biggest difference was the management. I had issues with the JCI branch in my area when I worked for them. The manager that I had wasn't supportive. We didn't get regular communication from management. This included reviews that were often months late. I quit JCI and went to a customer site as a technician. I got bored there and started looking around and found Siemens. The management was top notch and for the most part I didn't have any issues. I see JCI as a stepping stone to get into the business. In my area at least they have such a bad rep that they tend to have to hire FNGs to the business and train them. They hire low and keep you there. They try to get the most out of you before you realize that there are better jobs out there that pay way better.

    But this is subjective to my area. Here there is a lot of competition. Both from major manufacturers and local HVAC shops some of which have a large controls business. I would look at turn over in the Siemens branch to determine how good or bad they are. When I came on board with Siemens the last guy they hired was a year before me and most techs had at least 5 years with the company some with over 15.

    My experience also, I have had 5 to 6 good work colleagues go to SBT and most of them are still there 10 years later. JCI locally is a revolving door of techs and salesmen.

    Also in about 2003/04 just before JCI bought York they had an across the board mass reduction in people (layoffs) aimed at employees with 5-35 years of service.
    While some positions weren't filled corporate had already hired technicians and had them in schools getting trained to be sent out across the country to branches and when they came to the branch the Monday following the day employees were shown the door they were given the vehicles, phones etc of the employees they replaced at a lower rate of pay, fewer bennies and not enrolled into the pension system, from what I heard and most all job titles were changed and job descriptions tweeked. Those who stayed, from what I heard, were brought in one on one and offered the choice of leaving or staying with a new title and lower rate 8 out of 10 times.
    So ask yourself this, do you want to work loyally year after year for a company, get good reviews just to become a statistic? The company has been getting less and less employee oriented since the early 90's.
    It is a great place to learn and get experience. They have a good product and good tech support and training.
    If you can't fix it with JB Weld, Duct Tape, and Ty Wire it has to be replaced.
    No good deed goes unpunished.
    If you want to take off friday to go fishing then make sure you train your helper right.

    As a former Siemens employee that got poached by a customer (customer uses a little bit of everything), I saw Siemens from the inside and JCI/Alerton/ALC from the guys they sent out. Siemens is probably the most middle of the road corp of the bunch. How well you do there is up to you. The training program is definitely big, which is good. But it's up to the relationship between you and your branch to see how much training you get. Not a horrible choice. JCI looks like it chews up techs and spits them out. Other than that, you start getting into the manufacturer/dealer model with other products. Then it REALLY starts to depend on who you work for.

    Hardware: Siemens makes pretty good automation hardware. Not as infinitely programmable as some of the other guys, but that could be a good thing too.

    Software: Insight and Comm Tool are great. Desigo is still pretty iffy, if you ask me.

    I was one of the ones let go. Funny thing is the branch kept trying to hire me back through a temp agency for a few weeks until I told them I already had a new job and would not be interested.

    An old thread but JC has contacted me twice in past week. I could have interviewed today and now, after telling them no, its next week. I'm very very very most likely not gonna do interview. Waste of time.
