As TGG said. You found that stuff in old walk-in freezers at restaurants, etc.
It was a great refrigerant, just like R-12 but alas not very environmentally friendly.
"...refresh my memory. When did I start caring about this stuff...?"

I've seen a few OOOLLLDD carrier split a/cs that were R502. Some commercial and a res or two that had semihermetic comps in them.

Billy, are you sure they were not R 500, a yellow bottle?

Mostly commercial low temp refrigeration and ice machines. R-502 is a CFC so it's being phased out and is getting scarce. R-404 is now being used in many of the applications that was R-502.

Ahhh, that was the good old days.

Maybe 500, its been years since I've seen one. Someone put r22 in one to limp it a few days till we replaced it. I suppose it "worked" for the time being.

Bill, the only reason why I asked, is because I knew I guy when I was in the Air Force, that put 502 in a 500 system, and blewout the valves on the semi...God I wish those days, when I could clean my tools in R-11.....

Just curious what 30-lb of r-502 is selling for in the US now?
Is it more expensive than r-404a?

you will attract more flies with honey than with vinegar, but you can attract the most with a dead cat

    WHOA!!!!!
I have one customer who still has some r-502 in use. Our local wholesalers have just stopped selling it. I found and bought the last 2 jugs that I could find. $239 per 30 lb. jug. I don't think I'll be finding any more for sale on the island. Therefore, I will be prepping those systems for r-404a so they are ready if a change is needed.

recently ebay had a jug of 502 cheap. every once in awhile they have some real deals. someone finds an old jug in the back of the shop and thros it on ebay.

Old Hoshizakis used 502. had one the owner didn't want to retrofit, but wanted to make it run. recovered what little gas was left, pulled a nice vacuum and charged with 22. Told the owner it might last 2 days or two months. That was 2 years ago and damn if that machine isn;t still running great!

And I too miss the days when you could use R-11 as a solvent. stains from clothes, tools. dries film free too.

Of course i remember when I thought using 1-1-1-TCE was the greatest too.
