Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
Anyone seen this? Anyone have any clue as to what the purpose of it is?
Granted, none of the Universal Soldier movies are Academy Award material, but for the most part, they are mindles, action movie entertainment. This latest one has got to be the most boring, though graphic, disjointed movie I have suffered through in a long time....and I am a very tolerant movie watcher.
I'm not really sure why they even bothered bringing back Jean Claude or Dolph for the few cameo spots they did. Their presence just made the lack of a plot even more evident, and they weren't anything like their previous Universal Soldier characters.
Jean Claude looked reminiscent of Marlon Brando in Apocolypse Now, and at the end, Dolph was sporting the raccoon style makeup that Darryl Hannah made popular in Blade Runner. The whole movie reaked of borrowed...nay....stolen concepts of other movies. No characters or events were ever explained as to who or why they existed or for what purpose they were interacting with one another.
The director must have some sort of flicker fetish, or did too much acid while dancing at strobe lighted clubs. There are several different types of flickering filming done, all of them annoying. There is an "eye cam" blinking type of flickering that I guess was supposed to give us the feeling that we were looking out of the characters eyes. That was disorienting in "Being John Malkovich" and it was annoying in this movie. Then they had a more strobe like flickering while one person turned into another person. They even had flickering flourescent light bulbs randomly mounted on walls and ceilings. I've seen 1920's porn movies that flickered less than scenes in this movie.
Overall, you may guess that I was not real impressed with this latest Universal Soldier movie. Anyone else make it all the way through it?
