What is the best way to learn wiring diagrams for RTU's, heat pumps or any other pieces of complex equipment? Just curious.

yep, if thiers a board or boards involved its the only way.

Yep...or only work on units where the diagram is on the service panel. Then take it inside (been there done that).

Start with small electrical sections. Work your way up. Clearly understand the high voltage whether it be three phase or single phase from the low voltage control circuits. Understand what each symbol stands for and how that part reacts in the circuit. i.e. Is this part some sort of switch that only sees one side of the circuit? Or is this a motor requiring both sides of the power? Look at 1p motor capacitor schematic wiring carefully and absorb. 3p motors will not require run or start caps. Look for wiring numbers on the wire itself matching the schematic.

Hardest part for me, those darn schematics are too small and always faded.

First time you see it just get familiar with what does what, next thing you know it'll be all good.
