    I had to look at that twice before I realized that was the shaft that had worked it's way down through the base metal. Never seen one do that.

    I have a church with 50 year old Trane air handlers that wore the bearing through. Even though everything was working except the shaft and bearing they chose to replace the entire 1,000 pound air handler. Then they found out the ceiling below it was abestos so they had to spend a few thousand more on removal even before the old air handler could be lowered out of the ceiling for replacement.

    Flip the caster 180, stick in a new bearing, dimple the shaft a few thousand times to overcome loss of metal due to rubbing.....good to go.

    It's about time you get back on here!

    Around here where I work it's pretty likely to see a grease tube break, bearing fail, then go "this thing didn't get greased" even though there's a turd in the bottom of the air handler.

    Yeah......... BUT!....... it only made noise when it ran.
    Use the biggest hammer you like, pounding a square peg into a round hole does not equal a proper fit.

    Those Trane shafts are heavy!!

    IIRC, they're 3" diameter solid steel and turned down to 1-7/16" on the end for the bearings. Won't be fun to change the shaft, assuming the fan wheels are okay along with the blower housings.

    A hint on the bearings from experience; The bolt spacing on the flange bearings that Trane uses are non standard. Make sure you get them from Trane or you'll be out of luck when you go to replace them and find the bolt holes don't match.

    The ones I've worked on had a hollow shaft, like a drive shaft on a car.
    Still not something I like wrestling with over head, off a ladder.

    I've never had a problem finding bearings for Trane air handlers at a bearing and pulley supply house.

    Being my first day at that point I showed up with a bearing they gave me, it had a wider bolt pattern but a drill took care of that. The shaft was hollow but there was only 8" wide panel up top to access it so I had to crib it up higher and higher til it was in the right spot.
