I redid some valves in a brewery on the fermentation and storage tanks a few years ago. It was my first and only experience with a glycol system operating below freezing (25F). I used 3-way ball valves and had some bad experiences with the stems being pushed out by ice buildup and I made some half-assed repairs to reduce the ice buildup, and swore to myself to do much better next time.

Next time is here, maybe, the same brewery is asking for a quote to upgrade. I can't think of any globe or cartridge or ball valve configuration that is guaranteed ice proof because there will always be some moving part that could be affected by ice. I'm thinking solenoid valves are the solution.

Thoughts or experiences, anyone?
