Found this image on Tumblr posted by a friend who lives in Japan. Fujitsu mini-splits just sitting on the sidewalk waiting for trash collection. I would have stripped the copper out of them as my friend told me the coils were still there. Just wondered where the refrigerant is? Possibly still in the condensing unit.

May be in Japan only registered recyclers can strip any thing that has value. That is how it should be here anyway.

In Chicago that would have been gone before he got his camera out of his car. You know what's funny. In some areas here in the US people need to pay to have scrap metal removed. I could throw a fork out on garbage day and it would be gone before the garbagemen picked it up.

The indoor units have so little in them it's hardly worth it, but the outdoors have an ok amount, I would still have scrapped them myself. Free money.

My brother had a freezer on his porch that didn't work and the delivery guy from the lumber yard took it for free, it sure didn't seem like it was worth it but whatever.

I thought you would say you throw a fork and never hear it hit the ground. We have heavy trash pickup in the city. You can bring heavy trash into city from the county if you know someone. I had some garbage with a hint of metal and when I took it to my grandmas, roaming trucks of scrappers about fought over who got to unload my truck. I scrap, and it was a truckload that would not have been worth the fuel to cash in.

I repaired a condenser coil in a 10 ton unit sitting behind our shop, and showed up to work and found the entire coil cut out with a sawzall

Probably well organized disposal routines that must be followed. Perhaps scrap cannot be sold by the just anyone. That would solve alot of problems here.
