This would be funny, but a unit-mounted AFD starter is factory installed on the chiller in practically the same exact position. Or at least it was about 3-4 years ago. I had to go over the top and slide down behind the starter to check vane linkage on initial startup. It is so wide that it stretches almost to the control panel like this one. Couldn't believe it ...

I don't have to worry about that now, anyway. That particular startup was far from home, and I never did have a reason to return. It was in North Carolina, near the coast. To this day it is the only Trane with AFD that I have personally seen. And I remember there was no cell phone reception on site. Yep, just the ideal conditions for my first and only startup on a AFD machine! At least I had a few days notice that gave me time to download everything I could find on it. Trane's on-line support with e-Library is awsome! And I thought Eagle was dang near magic!

If my memory is correct, Eagle was a set of CD's that had (almost) all Trane literature on it. Seems like about 100 CD's in a case, with 1 added every few months as more new literature was published and more older stuff was transferred to CD. These CD's could only be read on a computer with proprietary software, with an abbreviated version available to non-Trane people. It was more convenient than carrying around all the paper copies of IOM's and service bulletins, but the e-library is even more so. You had to update Eagle regularily, and keeping up with the CD's was a bit of a pain. If you didn't update, you would get locked out, and getting back in was a pain. Plus an old fashioned index was used (on the "update" CD), which was a pain. It involved "shuffling" CD's in and out of your computer. But it still beat paper copies. Oh, and it's obsolete now.

Theres enough room to get in and do that as long as your not 350lbs . you could do an overhaul without removing the VFD as well if you had the height and or you could lift the pieces off over the condenser bundle . All depends on the install , but removing the VFD is easy its just very heavy on the big chillers .

Come on, those IGV actuators and omponents last forever and never need adjsutment. You'll never need ot get to that compressor thingy in there for a rebuild. I'm sure that a company that installs a panel like that, will never, ever surge the machine ot death or bust a tube and flood that thing.

Doing startup on a 1080 with an AFD like that this week... They are selling them like crazy in my district.

Nobody seems to be selling water cooled centrifugals like they used to, around here. Large air cooled seems to be favored now. Makes me sad ....
